Want to support Sunnyside & Woodside Mutual Aid? - Thursday, December 10
Donate to Sunnyside & Woodside Mutual Aid!
We’re excited to announce that Sunnyside & Woodside Mutual Aid is now accepting financial contributions! Through Open Collective, a platform that allows groups to more effectively collaborate and collect funds transparently, we will be able to centralize and manage our funds in a way aligned with our values.
In this new stage of fiscal sustainability, funds will continue to go to grocery reimbursements, food sourcing for our pantries, PPE & hygiene products, tech subscriptions, among other such expenses that allow us to best support our neighbors with all expenditures being visible to our community.
Contribute today at https://opencollective.com/swma_nyc.
Note: If you have made a pledge in our previous system, we will be in touch in the coming days to remind you of what you had pledged so that you may consider reallocating those funds to our new Open Collective system.
Can you contribute to our PPE Drive?
Do you have PPE or have access to PPE that you would like to donate to SWMA so that we can distribute to our neighbors?
Drop off PPE for the community on Saturday, December 12th from 10 AM - 1 PM at Lou Lodati Playground (Skillman Avenue and 43rd Street) or Wednesdays from 5:30 - 6:30 PM at St. Jacobus Church (72-01 43rd Avenue).
You can also mail PPE supplies to PO Box 771065, Woodside, NY 11377.
Have a gift for a child to spare this holiday season?
On Sunday, December 13th from 12 - 3 PM, we will be hosting a holiday toy drive at Sunnyside Reformed Church (48-03 Skillman Ave, Sunnyside, NY 11104). Please bring new or gently used and in good condition toys, books, and other children's gifts to be redistributed in the community.
Note: If you would not give it to your child, please do not donate it to us.
Want to attend the SWMA General Call?
Every two weeks we get together on Zoom, welcome new members, and update each other about continuing projects. Our next call is scheduled for Sunday, December 13 at 11 AM. To receive an email to the general call, send us an email here.
Also for new and old members, join this week’s meeting at 10:30 AM for a meet and greet. We will welcome new members to the group, providing a brief introduction to SWMA and suggest ways of getting involved. To receive an invitation to the meet and greet, send us an email here.
Do you compost?
Are you interested in learning more about composting and responsibly processing food waste?
Reducing inequity in our food systems and land resources, the 45th Street Composters are diverting organic waste from landfills and building community at the same time. Consider volunteering with 45th Street Composters or donating tools and supplies. Learn more about their work and visions here.
On Sundays from 2 - 4 PM, Woodside Sunnyside Composting [WSC] collects food scraps and pine needles at their site (the entrance to the garden is located on the corner of 50th Street & Barnett Avenue). Also consider donating non-perishable food that go to our food pantries.
New York City Department of Parks and Recreation has been evicting compost sites all across the city, including a composting facility under the Queensboro Bridge to create more parking for their vehicles and operational elements. Sign this petition to tell the Parks Department to save our community compost sites.
