Support Woodside Houses - Tuesday, January 19
Press Conference and Rally at Woodside Houses
At 3 PM today, Tuesday (January 19), neighbors will rally at Woodside Houses Management Office — 50-51 Broadway, Woodside, NY 11377 — to demand answers for weeks and months long gas outages and timely repairs to ongoing neglect from New York City Housing Authority [NYCHA].
The press conference and rally were organized by NYCHA Rising and Justice For All Coalition. “NYCHARising.info is an online resource that centralizes information about NYCHA’s past and present, and aims to inform the public discussion about what the future of public housing can and must be, and how we can get there. It also highlights the efforts on the ground by tenants and advocates, which are all too often erased or unacknowledged by mainstream media and elected officials. It accompanies the organizing work of the Justice For All Coalition, and specifically our Campaign to Demand Repairs, Reparations and Respect for public housing residents.”
SWMA is also looking to establish stronger ties with Woodside Houses residents. If you would like to help facilitate this or know someone who might, please email us at mail@swma.nyc.
Can you contribute to our PPE Drive?
Do you have PPE or have access to PPE that you would like to donate to SWMA so that we can distribute to our neighbors?
Drop off PPE for the community on Wednesdays from 5:30 - 6:30 PM at St. Jacobus Church — 72-01 43rd Avenue. PPE supplies can also be mailed to us at PO Box 771065, Woodside, NY 11377.
Interested in volunteering at our food pantries?
Getting involved has never been easier! Visit swma.nyc/signup to find the latest sign-up sheet for our food pantries, including shifts for driving, tabling, loading/unloading, sorting, and cooking! Schedules for the upcoming week are usually posted late Monday evenings, watch #1_announcement channel in Slack to be notified when a new sign-up sheet is posted.
Donate to Sunnyside & Woodside Mutual Aid!
Sunnyside & Woodside Mutual Aid is now accepting financial contributions through Open Collective, a platform that allows groups to more effectively collaborate and collect funds transparently. With Open Collective, we will be able to centralize and manage our funds in a way aligned with our values.
In this new stage of fiscal sustainability, funds will continue to go to grocery reimbursements, food sourcing for our pantries, PPE & hygiene products, tech subscriptions, among other such expenses that allow us to best support our neighbors with all expenditures being visible to our community. Contribute today or join #group_financial-sustainability on Slack.
How should SWMA relate to politicians?
SWMA has recently undergone many changes, including a newly approved code of conduct and the adoption of Open Collective as a fiscal sponsor and tool for transparently managing donations and spending. We haven’t made these decisions lightly, and in our discussions a challenge has emerged: What is our relationship with elected officials, those running for office, and those employed by a political office or campaign?
We have scheduled a meeting to discuss these matters for Sunday, January 31, 2021. If you would like to participate or are interested in learning more about these considerations, join the #group_mission-culture-ops on Slack or email us at mail@swma.nyc.
Interested in eviction protection?
If you or someone you know has “experienced financial hardship or face significant health risk because of COVID-19, you cannot be evicted until at least May 1, 2021. In order to receive protection, you must notify your landlord, the local eviction court, or both.”
In the linked form here, Housing Justice for All helps tenants take the necessary steps to confirm protections and notify required parties to prevent their eviction. If you have additional questions or concerns, join #group_housing on Slack or email us at mail@swma.nyc.
Do you compost?
Are you interested in learning more about composting and responsibly processing food waste?
Reducing inequity in our food systems and land resources, the 45th Street Composters are diverting organic waste from landfills and building community at the same time. Consider volunteering with 45th Street Composters or donating tools and supplies. Learn more about their work and visions here.
On Sundays from 2 - 4 PM, Woodside Sunnyside Composting [WSC] collects food scraps and pine needles at their site (the entrance to the garden is located on the corner of 50th Street & Barnett Avenue). At the same time, they collect non-perishable food items that go to our food pantries.
We have a new fridge! In the weeks ahead, we hope to paint it and find a host in the neighborhood to add it to the network of community fridges. If you are interested in helping to paint, want to host the fridge at your store, or know someone who might, join #project_community-fridge on Slack or email us at mail@swma.nyc.
P.S. Don’t forget, if you plan to attend a protest, Amnesty International has developed a toolkit for how to do so safely and Mask On Zone has created an Anti Surveillance Protest Guide.
