Help flyer Sunnyside & Woodside - Monday, February 15
Sign up to post flyers around you
We have updated our flyer designs with a gorgeous new logo! Can you commit to taking a zone in Sunnyside or Woodside and posting them all over? If so, click here to pick a zone!
We hope to get at least 2 volunteers per area to post at least 20 flyers each by February 28. We also need help taking down the old flyers (which you can do with no commitment at all!) and translating existing versions (join a Slack translation group to help!).
Vaccine support for seniors
Do you know an elder (65+) in Elmhurst or a surrounding community (including Woodside and Sunnyside) who could benefit from assistance scheduling a COVID-19 vaccine?
The Department of Health is working with the Elmhurst vaccine clinic to collect contact information for our 65+ neighbors so that they may reach out to schedule appointments as they become available. Click here to access the form. Sunnyside & Woodside Mutual Aid has also begun collecting general information about COVID-19 vaccine appointments in our resource wiki here.
Do you compost?
Are you interested in learning more about composting and responsibly processing food waste?
Future composting site alert: Rusty Wheelbarrow Farm Queens is an upcoming volunteer-run pantry farm and composting site. The food produced here will be donated to food pantries to help feed our hungry neighbors. If you are interested in being involved, please follow them on Instagram!
On Saturdays from 9:30 AM - 12:00 PM, 45th Street Composters are diverting organic waste from landfills and building community at the same time. Consider volunteering with 45th Street Composters or donating tools and supplies. Learn more about their work and visions here.
On Sundays from 2 - 4 PM, Woodside Sunnyside Composting [WSC] collects food scraps and pine needles at their site (the entrance to the garden is located on the corner of 50th Street & Barnett Avenue). During the same hours of scrap collection, they are also collecting non-perishable food items that go to our Saturday pantries.
Can you contribute to our PPE Drive?
Do you have PPE or have access to PPE that you would like to donate to SWMA so that we can distribute to our neighbors?
Drop off PPE for the community on Wednesdays from 5:30 - 6:30 PM at St. Jacobus Church — 72-01 43rd Avenue. PPE supplies can also be mailed to us at PO Box 771065, Woodside, NY 11377.
Interested in volunteering at our food pantries?
Getting involved has never been easier! Visit swma.nyc/signup to find the latest sign-up sheet for our food pantries, including shifts for driving, tabling, loading/unloading, sorting, and cooking! Schedules for the upcoming week are usually posted late Monday evenings, watch #1_announcement channel in Slack to be notified when a new sign-up sheet is posted.
How should SWMA relate to elected officials?
As we continue working to develop a policy for how SWMA relates with elected officials, let us know if you would like to weigh in. Join the Slack channel #group_mission-culture-ops and request access to the discussion.
We are currently finalizing the wording of these questions with a deadline of Tuesday, February 16.
This weekend we spread the love with a drive to collect peanut butter, coffee, and cooking oil for our neighbors along with a Valentine’s Day fundraiser, where we celebrated the ongoing efforts of many local groups (and pups) — enjoy the highlights!
Help us continue this work by donating to our OpenCollective or signing up for a volunteer shift next week.
P.S. Don’t forget, if you plan to attend a protest, Amnesty International has developed a toolkit for how to do so safely and Mask On Zone has created an Anti Surveillance Protest Guide.
