Friday, November 20 - Help find a home for our community fridge
Are you a business owner in Sunnyside or Woodside?
We are looking for a local business to host our community fridge. All the fridge needs from you is some sidewalk space and access to electricity (approximately $10/month). If you are interested or know someone who might, please reach out and help get this important project up and running.
"Food is the best vaccine against chaos." Join the network of community fridges across Queens and support our neighbors.
Do you compost?
Are you interested in learning more about composting and responsibly processing food waste?
Reducing inequity in our food systems and land resources, the 45th Street Composters are diverting organic waste from landfills and building community at the same time. Consider volunteering with 45th Street Composters or donating tools and supplies. Learn more about their work and visions here.
On Sundays from 2 - 4 PM, Woodside Sunnyside Composting collects food scraps at their site (the entrance to the garden is located on the corner of 50th Street & Barnett Avenue). More on Woodside Sunnyside Composting below in Community Petitions.
Interested in learning more about mutual aid?
On Sunday, November 22 from 6 – 7:30 PM, we will be holding a virtual book discussion on Mutual Aid: Building Solidarity During This Crisis (and the Next) by Dean Spade.
From the publisher: “Around the globe, people are faced with a spiraling succession of crises, from the Covid-19 pandemic and climate change-induced fires, floods, and storms to the ongoing horrors of mass incarceration, racist policing, brutal immigration enforcement, endemic gender violence, and severe wealth inequality. As governments fail to respond to—or actively engineer—each crisis, ordinary people are finding bold and innovative ways to share resources and support the vulnerable.”
Send an email to request an invitation or join #group_learning-about-mutual-aid on Slack to get the latest and next month’s book selection.
Want to volunteer at our food pantries?
Getting involved has never been easier! Visit swma.nyc/signup to find the latest sign-up sheet for getting involved in our food pantries, including shifts for driving, tabling, loading/unloading, sorting, and cooking! Schedules for the upcoming week are usually posted late Monday evenings, watch our announcement channel in Slack to be notified when a new sign-up sheet is posted.
Are you on Slack?
As Sunnyside & Woodside Mutual Aid continues to grow and develop within our community, Slack has been amongst one of the best ways to coordinate our activities, share ideas, and discuss long term goals. If you are interested in getting more involved, supporting SWMA, and sharing your ideas of mutual aid, join us on Slack.
Pantry garden destroyed by Parks Department again
On November 12, less than a week after the Woodside Sunnyside Composting’s pantry garden was partially rebuilt and replanted, NYC Parks once again razed the garden beds, pulling food out of our hungry neighbors' mouths.
Read the Queens Eagle article on the first attempt by the Parks Department to destroy the temporary pantry garden space.
For more information on the petition to use and protect the park space, click here.
Also: WSC is supporting SWMA food relief efforts by accepting donations of non-perishable food (i.e. canned food, rice, pasta, etc.) at their site (the entrance to the garden is located on the corner of 50th Street & Barnett Avenue) every Sunday from 2 PM - 4 PM (or until they run out of space, whichever comes first).
Join Free Clothing Queens on Saturday, November 21, to donate or receive clothing at Woodside Houses (Broadway and 49th Street). Donations will be accepted from 12 - 1 PM and distributed from 12 - 4 PM.
P.S. Don’t forget, if you plan to attend a protest, Amnesty International has developed a toolkit for how to do so safely and Mask On Zone has created an Anti Surveillance Protest Guide.
